As a teenager, I was fascinated with North Korea, and joked that I’d get there one day. I finally made it in my mid-twenties, after convincing a tour operator to take me, in return for a newspaper feature I’d write. The scenery was mind-blowing – we hiked past forest-fringed lakes and up snow-capped mountains. It inspired my love of off-the-beaten-path places.
My favourite trips include Togo (to write about voodoo), a visit to a remote lodge in Peru’s Tambopata National Reserve, and several safaris in Zambia’s Kafue National Park (even though a particularly intense lion-related incident convinced me I was going to die).
I usually do a couple of trips a month, and mostly write destination-based features, along with round-ups and travel-related Q and As with celebrities – all of which I love. I write for newspapers, magazines like Condé Nast Traveller, and various websites, including TravelSupermarket’s brilliant blog, of course! My work has also been featured in The Independent and The Telegraph.
Asia and Africa are the regions I love most – all too often, people underestimate their diversity. I’ve also done several ski seasons (as a snowboard instructor and chalet girl) and mountains are definitely my happy place! To find out where I’m going next, follow me on Twitter @tamarahinson.
