Larnaca car hire

There are a number of international car hire companies, such as Avis, Sixt and Europcar, at Larnaca International Airport (LCA) and some local companies also have desks here. You’ll find the rental desks in the arrivals hall, just after you exit the baggage claim area.

Cyprus being a small island, you won’t have to drive any great distance to get to your hotel. Aiya Napa, for example, is around 40 minutes away from Larnaca airport.

There are several villages well worth exploring near Larnaca. In Kiti, 10km (6 miles) to the west, attractions include the 11th-century Byzantine Angeloktisti Church (the name means ‘built by angels’) and Angeloktisti Monastery, one of the oldest in the world. Lefkara, 40km (25 miles) inland at the foot of the Troödos Mountains, is famous for its embroidery, and the mountains are the focal point for hiking and cycling as well as skiing in the winter.

You must be at least 21 years old to hire a car, though most companies impose a surcharge for drivers under the age of 25. The rules of the road are pretty much the same as in the UK, but are not as strictly enforced. Always keep alert, and be careful on roundabouts as the usual conventions often aren’t followed. Parking is pretty much anywhere you can find a space and is free outside city centres.

If you’re involved in an accident, the police must always be contacted, and they will notify the ambulance or fire service if necessary. Don’t move your rental car until the police and insurance company agents have finished documenting and assessing the incident.

1. Make sure your car rental company allows you to take the car with a full tank of petrol and return it with a full tank, rather than empty – Cyprus is so small that you may not even use a full tank during your stay.

2. You can’t use the horn between 10pm and 6am, or in the vicinity of hospitals.

3. Smoking in a car with a child (under 16 years old) in it is prohibited.
