Some of Corfu’s shores are unexpectedly quiet – most commonly along the north-western or south-western shorelines, where either the cliffs are sheerer or hotels fewer. Gaining access is challenging without a car, and thus those renting a vehicle have a distinct advantage.

In the south you’ll find glorious countryside: it’s worth driving here with no real plan and simply pootling around between orange groves and salt pans. Every so often you’ll come across a small, snoozy town, and generally a classic taverna. This, most certainly, is the life.

One of the interior’s chief attractions is the Aqualand Water Park in Agios Ioannis, west from Corfu Town – it’s a cinch to reach if you have a rental car.

Taking 90 minutes, passenger hydrofoils to Paxos depart from Corfu Town and Lefkimmi – hiring a car allows you to be on board for an early departure, and have ample time to explore the next Ionian Island down.
