Kos is a Greek island in the south Sporades group of the Dodecanese islands. Kos is a relatively small island measuring approximately 25 miles by half a mile, yet it’s still a good idea to arrange a rental car to get around easily and independently.

The island of Kos has a quiet and a lively side. The main port and population centre on the island, also called Kos, is the tourist and cultural hub, with whitewashed buildings and many hotels, restaurants and a small number of nightclubs forming a strip – this is the liveliest resort on the island.

Located on the north-eastern tip of this long and narrow island, the town is an hour at most by road from even the furthest areas, such as Kefalos in the south-west. The resort of Kardamena is located roughly halfway along the south coast. By day the beaches provide plenty of space to simply flop and relax, while by night – when the neon lights glow under the stars – bars and clubs fill with people looking to let loose and have a good time.

The other side to Kos is a complete contrast: picture-postcard scenes of small hamlets ideal for exploring and little whitewashed villages dotted across green hills. But to discover this other, quieter side, you’ll need to arrange a good hire car. Smaller resorts like Marmari and Mastihari delve into the quieter side of Kos.
