Souss-Massa National Park is just south of Agadir. Get behind the steering wheel and you can be in this wonderful wilderness in less than an hour. Wetlands and dunes mark this landscape, which unusual-looking birds use as a feeding ground: look out for bald ibis, spoonbills and warblers. The park also looks after some under-threat mammals, such as oryx, addax and gazelle.

Head north from Agadir and you’ll come across the beaches of Taghazout and Tamraght in under half an hour. It’s a mini Marrakech and the perfect place to visit if you don’t plan on making it to the real thing.

If time does allow, do make the effort to see Marrakech. It’s a 155-mile journey that takes around three hours by road, but the rewards are abundant. Get lost in the warren of alleys and markets stalls in the medina, cool off amid the harmonious aromas of the gorgeous gardens, and be totally charmed by the human circus in Place Djemaa el-Fna square.
