Dykes, tulips, theme parks, vast beaches, canals, chocolate box villages and world-class museums are just some of the things you’ll want to explore in your rental car.

Amsterdam is the first place for many to visit. From Dam Square in the centre of the city it’s easy to take a canal boat tour to orientate yourself before plunging into the exploration of attractions such as the world-famous Anne Frank Museum, housed in the same building Anne and her family hid in during the Nazi occupation of World War II. Close by is Rotterdam with its modern architecture, and just beyond is the fantastic Dutch coastline with soft sandy beaches and lots of places to eat out (seafood is a speciality) and enjoy a day at the beach. If you are the sporty type, hire a bike to ride up the coastal paths or rent a windsurfer to ride the North Sea waves offshore.

Efteling is a Dutch theme park and is worth the drive so you can ride white-knuckle rollercoasters and the kids can enjoy Dutch fairy-tale worlds packed with fun entertainment.

A drive to the north of the country will bring you through green and vibrant countryside to the famous Zeeland area with beach resorts and unspoiled coastline. Further north you’ll find the agricultural areas of Friesland with the characteristic herds of black and white cows in the fields. Beyond them are lakes galore to get out on and explore in boats and yachts or on hikes and bikes. By winter they freeze over, giving you the chance to try out ice skating, something that the Dutch rule when it comes to competitive skating.

Get your timing right and driving through Holland can be one of the most colourful experiences you will ever have. Springtime in the Netherlands means one thing, flowers - from flower markets to endless fields of bright springtime colours. Head to the Leiden area for the most intense colour experience or to places such as Keukenhof with its flower park. Each spring there is a huge flower parade which runs from Noordijk to Haarlem, with floats decked out in more flowers than you have ever imagined driving along the packed route.
