The region of Silesia can be easily dismissed as a landscape choked by industry and brimming with busy cities. While some areas have been heavily developed, there are many wonderful parts of Silesia that deserve a closer look. A slightly longer drive from Wroclaw is the city of Katowice (it takes two hours to reach Katowice from Wroclaw). The city features an interesting mix of the old and new, reflected in its buildings, cultural pursuits, nightlife and attitudes. It’s also an ideal base for a night or two if you plan to visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and State Museum, which is a 45-minute drive out of Katowice. You can travel direct to the former concentration camps at Auschwitz from Wroclaw, but it can take six hours to drive there and back so a stay nearby is advised.
