The ring road on the outskirts of Palma links to motorways heading north, east and west – they’ll take you straight to the main coastal resorts and theme parks, or up to the mountains with their lush valleys and traditional villages.

The island’s compact size means you can travel from Palma to Alcúdia in the north in under an hour. Take a turning on the way to explore a deserted beach, charming café or rustic village market, and you’ll still not be far from a main road or motorway.

If you plan to go off-grid to explore rural life, bring a satnav with an up-to-date map of Majorca. Use it to travel into the glorious Tramuntana mountains – but watch out for sudden sharp bends, narrow roads, cyclists and wandering sheep.

Majorca’s main roads are well maintained, with good signposts. In busy resorts, buses, scooters and taxis jostle for space in narrow streets packed with pedestrians; local drivers can be quite relaxed with their indicators, so beware of the car in front making a sudden turn or braking sharply.

As for parking, avoid yellow lines – your vehicle could be clamped or towed away. Blue-lined zones are fine, but look out for underground car parks, which are often a better option (not least because they keep your car cool in the fierce summer heat).

The pretty rural town of Sóller is nestled in Majorca's ‘valley of oranges’, an extensive citrus-growing area near the island's north-east coast. Its cobbled old town is packed with charming bars and restaurants, with the impressive Sant Baromeu church in the centre.

If you're in Majorca with kids, a water park day is pretty much non-negotiable. This is one of the better ones, with a good mix of grown-up thrills (including Majorca's highest waterslide), gentler rides and colourful playgrounds.

1. Watch your fuel, especially if you're going for a long drive in rural areas. Petrol stations can be scarce when you’re off the beaten track.


2. Be cautious at pedestrian crossings. Cars park close to – and sometimes even on – crossings, which can restrict your view. Crossings can be next to roundabouts, so look out for pedestrians in unexpected places.


3. Carry your licence and insurance papers with you; the police sometimes carry out spot checks, and without your papers you’ll be liable for a fine.
