If you turn your wheels north of Valencia and drive up the coast for 30 minutes, you’ll come across Sagunto and its treasury of ancient ruins. It’s an old Roman city that dates back 2,000 years and it’s littered with architectural wonders, from the remains of the hilltop Sagunto Castle to the picturesque, winding streets of its Old Town.

Requena

Driving time: One hour

If cava is your tipple of choice while in Spain then Requena is a must. It’s located an hour’s drive inland from Valencia and is in the very heart of the region’s vineyards. The town of Requena itself is worth visiting for its charming medieval centre that’s a maze of narrow alleyways and buildings dating back to the 15th century. Dotted around the town are various local wineries where you can try robust reds, crisp cavas and a variety of home grown culinary treats.

3. Spain’s legal alcohol limit is much lower than the UK’s at 0.05% for experienced drivers and 0.03% for those who have been driving for less than two years. Make sure you have a designated driver if you’re heading to the vineyards near Valencia for the day.
