The city of Chester is an interesting place, set amidst some of England and Wales' most beautiful countryside. A border city with a frontier past, as its Roman walls and medieval fortifications attest, there is also one of England's best-known zoos here.
Chester is an ancient English city which lies very close to the border with Wales. This location has shaped much of its history, certainly during the Middle Ages. And visitors can find plenty of historical locations to explore during their stay here. Among the more prominent monuments in the city are the city walls, which stretch for around two miles around the old medieval area. They are actually the most complete city walls in the UK and a path leads visitors across nearly their whole extent.
Other prominent local monuments include the cathedral, which dates back to the 11th century. This building contains the shrine of St Werburgh, as well as some monastic structures. The Rows are a historical structure which is unique in Britain, consisting of two-storey 'streets', with shops and dwellings on both levels. There are also many Roman sites in the city, the most prominent of which is the Roman Amphitheatre, a venue which is still undergoing archaeological excavations. The Grosvenor Museum features an impressive overview of the history of the city and the wider area and there is also a miniature railway for children of all ages to enjoy.
But there are still wild things to be found within Chester itself, not least at Chester Zoo. Boat trips along the local River Dee can also open up new perspectives on the city, as well as giving visitors the chance to spot local wildlife.
There are convenient downtown locations from which to pick up your hire car in Chester, so you don't need to worry about finding transport to one of the nearby airports to pick up your rental.
