Parts of today's city date back to the 12th century. Business has grown on the back of agriculture, with cattle, hops and apples for cider the major drivers of development through the ages. There is even a modern day Cider Route which you can explore. The Cider Museum is part of this trail and you can learn how cider is made and stored.

The cathedral is also worth a visit. With stained glass dating back to the 13th century, the building is a mixture of Norman and Romanesque architecture and is also home to the Mappa Mundi housed in the Chained Library Exhibition Centre. Dating back to medieval times, it is a wonderful interpretation of how we saw the world in those days, with a map centred on Jerusalem depicting the world as we believed it to be.

The Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum celebrates the history of the local regiment who have fought in many campaigns of the British Army, from Gallipoli to Palestine and up to the modern day. The Hereford Museum and Art Gallery is a small museum in the city centre with many local exhibits of historical note as well as a good art display. The Waterworks Museum tells the story of how our modern day drinking water is produced and delivered to our taps.

The city centre itself is traffic-free, allowing you to wander the streets at your own pace.

Birmingham Airport (BHX) is the nearest airport to the city, reached within an hour and half along major roads and the M5/M42. You can arrange to pick up your vehicle at the airport or in downtown Birmingham itself. To find the best price on car rental in Hereford, use TravelSupermarket's search tool to the left.
