Hull is a city of long, straight roads, leafy avenues and useful bypasses built to keep ferry traffic out of central areas. The well-signposted city centre is easily navigable, although you may encounter traffic around the hospital and railway station on Anlaby Road. Much of the centre, including the historic old town, has been pedestrianised, so check your route carefully before setting off or bring along a satnav.

A 30mph speed limit applies on Hull’s residential roads and on the major east–west routes in and out of the city centre. Although it is a dual carriageway, there is a 40pmh speed limit on the A63 – Clive Sullivan Way – which provides easy access to the city from the Humber Bridge and M62 further west. The country roads to the north and east of Hull are 60mph unless otherwise marked.

Parking your car is straightforward in Hull, thanks to the various council-operated multi-storey car parks, including those on Pryme Street and George Street and at King William House. You’ll also find on-street pay-and-display spaces within walking distance of the Museum Quarter. If you’re on a tight budget and don’t mind a walk, there’s free parking on residential streets a little further afield.

Lincoln Cathedral and Castle

An hour’s drive south of Hull, the medieval city of Lincoln looks out proudly from its clifftop location. The quaint cobbles of Bailgate and timber-framed cottages of Steep Hill ooze history but it’s the castle and cathedral that are the standout attractions.

Lincoln Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece famous for its stone-carved imp, was once the tallest building in the world. Just across the square, the imposing 11th-century Lincoln Castle is home to a priceless copy of the Magna Carta. You’ll also find Roman walls, windmills, barges and pretty commons in this charming old city.

Hornsea and the North Sea coast

Driving time: 35 minutes

With its attractive promenade, sandy Blue Flag beach, freshwater lake and towering Victorian folly, Hornsea offers gentle, laid-back days out by the seaside. This pleasant coastal town formed around its once-thriving pottery industry, but it’s now a destination for outdoor activities including sailing, horse riding, fishing and birdwatching.

Alternatively, Hornsea makes an ideal stopping point for lunch on a wider exploration of the east coast. To the north lies lively Bridlington and the rugged, white-chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head; to the south you'll find Withernsea and the fast-eroding heritage coastline of Spurn Point.

Beverley and Beverley Westwood

Driving time: 20 minutes

Independent shops, historic inns and cosy cafés line the cobbled streets of Beverley, which meander their way towards the market town’s skyline-dominating minster.

On the edge of town, just beyond the final splendid row of townhouses, the pastures of Beverley Westwood offer lovely rural views, hiking, riding, golfing and horse racing. Lush, tree-lined and full of cattle, this historic corner of the Wolds is a superb surviving area of traditional common land.
