For big city pleasures you have a number of options close by. Manchester is a mere half-hour drive from Rochdale and offers everything you could want from a world-class city. Famed for its sporting teams, there are also museums, art galleries, restaurants, bars and many, many shops in this buzzing metropolis. Head to the north east however, and you'll find the neighbouring Yorkshire cities of Bradford and Leeds, which offer very different scenes. For a taste of the industrial past of the north, journey a few minutes beyond Bradford and visit the Victorian model village of Saltaire. Dreamed up by wool mogul Sir Titus Salt to move his mill workers from the Bradford slums, the entire village, including the mill, has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. 

While Salt was building his village, just 20 minutes to the east a brood of creative sisters were staking their place alongside wool as another of Yorkshire's most famous exports. The Bronte sisters, Anne, Emily and Charlotte, lived in the parsonage at Haworth and the entire village holds a sacred place in the hearts of global literature fans, many of whom visit this little village in the Pennines.
