Colchester, a garrison town and the old Roman capital of Britain, is just 35 miles to the east of Stansted along the A120. Visit the city's museum with its prehistoric and Roman artefacts and the Norman Castle that was built over the remains of a Roman temple. Holytree Museum is a Georgian townhouse with displays of local history and a doll's house that is a reproduction of the museum. Don't forget to look at the church steeples as you walk around Colchester. Some of them were damaged in earthquakes during 1692 and 1931.

Drive along the A12 to the county town of Ipswich and then to the pretty Suffolk villages of Woodbridge and Wickham Market. It's just a shirt hop along local roads to the North Sea coast for some fresh fish and chips. The best time to visit this area is during the summer when you can hire a boat and sail around the Broads, the regional wetlands.
