The pretty town of Bridgnorth, which perches on the steep banks of the Severn Valley and is split into High Town and Low Town, is a 20-minute drive from Telford. See the castle or ride the funicular railway that connects the upper and lower sections of the town. 

For another look at a lovely British town, you can journey to Much Wenlock - another easy 20-minute drive from Telford. It was here, amid the architectural gems of another time, that the founder of the modern Olympic movement was born - the 2012 London Olympics had a mascot named Wenlock, as a tip of the cap to the importance of this village-like destination. 

The Shropshire Hills offer a taste of the great outdoors during your break in Telford. The rising peaks and falling valleys provide breath-taking vistas. If you're willing to drive a little further, the Peak District National Park can be reached in less than 90 minutes from Telford, though if you've got children with you, your journey might not get further towards the Peak District than the 75-minute mark - at which point you'll find the thrill rides of the Alton Towers Resort.
