Budget carrier Jet2 operates seasonal flights to the Austrian capital, departing from UK airports, including Leeds Bradford (LBA) and Newcastle (NCL). Residents of the Channel Islands can set off to Vienna from Jersey Airport (JER) with one of Austrian Airlines’ seasonal charter flights.

The city is perfect for a surprise romantic weekend. If you’re the type of free spirit who likes a bargain, however, then plan ahead – booking in advance is a sure way to find Vienna’s cheapest flight prices.

Don’t worry, forward thinking doesn’t make you less exciting, it just means you have more cash to spend during your trip.

Vienna Airport – or Vienne-Schwechat, if you are going full local – is the only one in the city, the biggest in Austria and the first port of call for direct flights from the UK.

The airport is only 17 kilometres (11 miles) from the centre and, with roughly 22.4 million passengers annually, it’s just a bit bigger than Stansted – and a whole lot smaller and easier to navigate than Heathrow or Gatwick.

If you can’t wait to get the party started, the City Airport Train (CAT) gets you into the heart of Vienna in 16 minutes. Alternatively, you can also take the rapid transit railway, known as the S-Bahn, or catch a bus; they’re both slower options but cheaper, and the bus ride is far more scenic.

Another option is to go all out and book a taxi online, having a car and driver at your disposal the minute you arrive.
