The aroma of sweet pastries, the carols of the Christmas markets, the soothing notes of Mozart and Beethoven, the sight of sprawling royal palaces: Vienna is a real treat for the senses and cheap flights to the Austrian capital from the UK provide an even happier experience.

While there are very few direct flights to Vienna from Newcastle Airport (NCL), there are plenty of bargain fares to compare on connecting services. British Airways, KLM and Air France are just three of the providers to take off at Newcastle and land at Vienna International Airport (VIE) via cities such as London and Paris. Flight times for indirect services range between four and six hours.

Jet2 runs a handful of seasonal direct flights from Newcastle to Vienna to coincide with the Christmas markets in November and December, though you’ll have to act fast to snap up a seat on these rare services. The average direct flight time is two and a half hours.

The largest airport in the North East of England, Newcastle International Airport serves nearly five million passengers each year. Located a few miles to the north of the city of Newcastle and well connected by road and rail, the airport is a handy getaway point for the region.

The airport has its own station on the area’s Metro network. It is also well connected by road and just minutes from the A1. Bus and coach services arrive frequently, while drivers find plentiful parking both on and off site. If you plan to drive to the airport, book airport parking well in advance of travel to secure the cheapest rates. You can compare airport-parking deals on TravelSupermarket.

As well as the usual duty-free and high-street shopping brands, you can enjoy a spot of pre-flight pampering at the Aerospa. If you’re rather relax without a mani or a pedi, book time in the Aspire Lounge.

Older children will find plenty of fun ways to while away the time before your flight in the Namco Games arcade.
