From the ancient capital of Dhaka to national parks filled with magnificent wild animals, from ornate Buddhist temples to the beautiful Bay of Bengal and gorgeous beaches, Bangladesh has plenty to offer.

International flights to Bangladesh land at Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC), formerly known as Zia Airport. It is located around 20 kilometres from central Dhaka. 

Hotel accommodation is abundant in downtown Dhaka, and there is plenty to see in this metropolis of some 10million inhabitants. The city's mosques - there are literally hundreds of them - are legendary. 

Outside the capital, some of the most impressive mosques can be seen in the town of Bagerhat, in the south-west of Bangladesh, including a famous 60-dome mosque.

Those with an interest in architecture will also be stunned by the many ornate Buddhist temples in Bangladesh, one of the most jaw-dropping being Buddha Dhatu Jadi, in the town of Balaghata.

Bangladesh combines big-city living with fantastic wildlife spotting. National parks such as Sundarbans and Rajendrapur and the lakeside district of Rangamati are great places to see animals such as Bengal tigers and colourful birds in their national habitat. Many tour operators run trips to the national parks from Dhaka.

Adventure tourists and outdoor types will find plenty of exciting activities in Bangladesh, with the Chittagong Hill Tracts in particular offering excellent terrain for trekkers and climbers. There are some 13,000 square kilometres of jungle-clad hills, ravines and gorges.

Sylhet is another popular trekking region, with challenging walks and sublime views. The gorgeous beaches at Kuakata and the famous Cox's Bazar resort are perfect places to just chill out and catch your breath. 

Located on the beautiful Bay of Bengal, Cox's Bazar is officially the longest beach in the world. Sunbathers have plenty of elbow room even as the destination attracts increasing numbers of international visitors.

Another area of great natural beauty in Bangladesh is Srimangal (sometimes spelled Sreemangal), known as Bangladesh's Capital of Tea. A land of sloping hills thick with rain forest, Srimangal offers  breath-taking views - as well as wonderful cups of that hot beverage.

The monsoon season in Bangladesh brings daily rainfall and high temperatures. The best time of year to find a cheap flight to Bangladesh is during this wet season, which runs between May and September.
