Non-stop flights from London Gatwick to Jose Marti International Airport in Havana take 10 hours on average. Fly KLM from Aberdeen with a stopover in Amsterdam and you can be in Havana in about 13 hours, and Air France fly from Birmingham to the Cuban capital via Paris in 15 hours and 30 minutes.

Flights from the UK to Cuba now give you a choice of coastal airports, letting you fly direct to colourful Havana or even head for the frenetic south-eastern city of Santiago, known for its legendary music clubs and strong African influence.

Obviously, a tour of the Cuban capital in a vintage Chevy is a must, but going for car hire in Cuba is also a necessity if you want to do some serious exploring. The Viñales Valley, a serene landscape of limestone hills and tobacco farms west of Havana, is enough in itself to make hiring a car worthwhile. Further east, go underground in the Cuevas de Bellamar cave system near Matanzas, or head to Cuba’s end and take to the Sierra Maestra or Desembarco del Granma National Park.
