Finnair operates from London Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh, with British Airways joining it on the London route and Norwegian flying from London Gatwick.

Flights to Helsinki arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL), which is around 20 kilometres north of the city centre.

A Finnair bus transfer that is open to all runs between the airport and the city centre; tickets cost a little over six euros per person.

Public buses also operate, plus a train line that opened in 2015 to connect the airport to the city centre. A regional train ticket costs five euros (buy at the platform ticket machines or on the train) and the journey takes 35 minutes.

The frequency of transportation services from the airport varies throughout the year, as tourism winds down over the quieter winter months.

At certain times, you may therefore have to shell out around 45 euros for a taxi – or hire a car to get to your final destination.

Helsinki has a first-class public transport system, but hiring a car is the best way to escape the city and seeing more of Finland. Get it organised in advance and collect your vehicle at the airport (or a convenient downtown location).
