For those not in London, cheap direct flights from Manchester Airport (MAN) get you into the city in less than two hours with easyJet and Ryanair.

You can also fly from Glasgow (GLA), Birmingham (BHX) and several other regional airports, including Doncaster Sheffield (DSA) and East Midlands Airport (EMA).

Competition is fierce, so you can be as picky as you want with times and prices, but don’t take too long to make up your mind as the best fares are snapped up well in advance.

Berlin is a year-round destination.

The city has more Christmas markets than almost any other in Europe, February’s Berlin International Film Festival is on a par with Sundance, and there are beach hangouts and beer gardens open all summer long.

September is the month for Lollapalooza music festival and giant harvest festivals. And, come New Year’s Eve, Berlin throws one of the biggest street parties on the continent.

Bagging the best bargains for this ever-popular city is all about booking as far in advance as you can. Whether you want to go ice skating on Alexanderplatz in winter or skateboarding at Tempelhof in spring, you’re guaranteed to find cheap flights to Berlin as long as you don’t leave it until the very last minute (and even then fares can be reasonable). The city is serviced by two airports, Tegel (TXL) and Schönefeld (SXF).

Tegel is to the west of the city and Schönefeld is to the east. You can choose either, as they’re both within easy reach of all central districts.

Public transport transfers from both Berlin airports have you in Mitte (the centre of the city) within 30 minutes. There are six S-Bahn trains every hour from Schönefeld to Pankow and Tegel has a choice of express bus services to Alexanderplatz.

Alternatively, take a taxi: airport cab fares are pre-set and, unless otherwise instructed by you, the driver must take the shortest and cheapest route – it’s the law.

If you’re hiring a car, you’ll be pleased to know it’s just a 40-minute drive into the city centre from either airport and the routes are direct and well-signposted.
