For a hedonistic summer destination, the island of Mykonos is surprisingly poorly connected to the UK...

There are no year-round flights at all except for connecting services with Aegean from London and Manchester via Athens.  The summer months also see Vueling connecting over Rome from London’s Gatwick airport.

In the summer months, however, flights are a lot easier to find. British Airways flies direct a couple of times a week from Heathrow, while easyJet offers services from Gatwick, Luton and Manchester and there are charter services with companies such as TUI.

Mykonos is a small island, so it’s easy and cheap to get where you want to be.

Public buses run on a regular basis between the airport and Mykonos Town; if you are staying here this is a cheap option.

However, most of the main holiday resorts in Mykonos huddle along the west coast of the island, close to the airport. So get in a taxi at the official rank and it should take no longer than 10 minutes to reach Agios Ioannis or Ornos; 15 minutes for hotels in and around Agios Stefanos.

Shuttle buses also operate from the airport, offering a cheaper door-to-door alternative to a taxi – although your journey could be longer if you are the last of the group to be dropped off.

There are a few very good hotels in Mykonos Town itself, though this labyrinth of cobbled lanes is usually visited on day trips from resorts along the coastline.

Ornos is close to the main town and has everything required of a great holiday, from a wide sandy beach of pale sands to excellent hotels, restaurants and a quiet, family feel.

Plati Yialos, on the south coast, has a cosmopolitan air and is equally resplendent, with a beautiful beach and a good mix of restaurants and bars.

The small sandy bay of Agios Stefanos is populated with hotels, while Agios Ioannis offers much of the same in the way of peaceful days and low-key nights tucking into fresh food and delicious wine.

Along the coast are beaches, such as Paradise Beach near Plati Yialos, and Psarou Beach near Ornos Bay, that are alive 24 hours a day with a vibrant party scene. Mykonos Town has plenty of bars and nightclubs too. And while taxis are in good supply, you can easily walk from resorts such as Ornos and Agios Stefanos to the heart of the after-dark action in Mykonos Town.
