Puglia has two international airports: Bari (BRI) and Brindisi (BDS).

Ryanair offers cheap flights from London Stansted to Bari and Brindisi, plus seasonal services from Liverpool to Bari and from Manchester to Brindisi. Alitalia connects travellers from London Heathrow wishing to land in Bari or Brindisi. British Airways and easyJet also connect the capital with Italy’s Puglia region.

The main islands of Italy have their own airports, meaning you can fly direct from the UK.

Book flights to Italy’s sensational sisters of Sicily and Sardinia and you can touch down in just two and a half to three hours.

Both islands are home to a handful of airports: Sicily’s main airports are Catania (CTA), Palermo-Punta Raisi (PMO) and Trapani-Birgi (TPS). In Sardinia, flights go to three international airports: Alghero (AHO), Olbia-Costa Smeralda (OLB), and Cagliari-Elmas Airport (CAG).

Mind-boggling as this might appear (just check a map, you’ll be fine), the range of airports and direct services from UK airports means there are plenty of bargain seats up for grabs.

A flight to Italy is not the only way to get there.

Why not go for a romantic adventure and take the train? There’s surely no more stylish way to arrive than on the Venice Simplon Orient Express, which departs from London once a week and takes 24 hours to reach Venice, five-star luxury all the way.

There are more affordable and faster rail options of course. The Eurostar from London to Paris and then high-speed TGV train to Milan, for example, can be done effortlessly in a day.
