Pisa (PSA) is the main gateway. Ryanair flies in from Stansted, Liverpool, Leeds Bradford, Prestwick, Edinburgh and East Midlands, while easyJet has services from London Luton and Gatwick, Bristol and Manchester.

British Airways flies from London Heathrow and Gatwick. And Jet2 has services from Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds Bradford, Belfast and East Midlands.

Other options include flying into Florence (FLR) with Meridian from Gatwick, or into nearby Bologna with easyJet or British Airways from Gatwick and with Ryanair from Bristol, Edinburgh, Stansted and Manchester.

Getting to and from the airports in Tuscany is relatively easy and cheap.

From Pisa Airport, you can use bus services, trains, a taxi, or a hire car to get into the city with ease. Regular bus services take passengers to destinations such as Pisa, Florence, Siena and Lucca, while the PisaMover Bus service also runs from the airport, whisking visitors to the railway station of Pisa Central in only eight minutes. The PisaMover train service, due to open in December 2015, cuts the journey time to just five minutes. Alternatively, take a taxi. A journey into central Pisa should cost no more than 10 euros, plus a little extra if travelling on a Sunday or late at night. Just make sure the metre is switched on before you set off.

Regular buses run from Florence Airport into the central area of Florence, with a journey time of between 15 and 30 minutes. A fixed-price taxi tariff will highlight a fee of just 20 euros to travel between the airport and the centre of Florence. But with supplements applied for travelling from the airport, luggage, night-time travel and journeys during bank holidays – a family of four might be looking at a closer to 30 euros, not including a tip.

The Appennino Shuttle bus ferries passengers between Bologna Airport and Florence. The journey time is 90 minutes and the cost is around 20 euros per adult.

Stay in Pisa to see the famous Leaning Tower and the handful of other attractions around the Piazza dei Miracoli. While Pisa isn’t packed with obvious tourist sites, the chance to be immersed in real Italian city life (and to taste some of that incredible cuisine) should not be missed.
