The Ivory Coast was at one time a major trade route between Mali and Ghana and has always had strong ties with its West African neighbours. The country's Atlantic coast is made up of many beautiful sandy beaches. Some of the best are found at the beach resort of Assouinde where visitors can enjoy palm-lined beaches. Other popular beach areas include Grand Bassam and Bondoukou. In some areas the currents are very strong, so always check the local advice regarding sea swimming.
In Abdijan, the Museum of Cote d'Ivoire and the National Museum are great places to discover more about the country's history and culture. Modern Abidjan can be experienced in the Plateau Commercial Area while the heart and soul of the city can be found in the bars, restaurants and shops of the older Treichville area. The capital city is actually Yamoussoukro, which is a small town and home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro, the largest building of Christian worship in the world.
Some of the major highlights of the country are its beautiful national parks including Comoe National Park, a UNESCO site which is home to a hugely diverse collection of plant species. The town of Man and its surrounding waterfalls are worth a visit especially for hikers who can attempt the nearby Mount Tonkiou.
