Flights to Tokyo

The Japanese mega city of Tokyo enjoys great connections from the UK, so there’s no excuse to miss out...

From London Heathrow, you can fly non-stop to two airports in Tokyo. Daily departures with British Airways, JAL, Virgin Atlantic and ANA go to Tokyo’s Narita airport (NRT). BA also offers a daily service to Tokyo Haneda (HND). Flying time is around 12 hours non-stop.

Lufthansa has flights via Munich and Frankfurt, Air France via Paris and KLM via Amsterdam, while SAS and Finnair travel through Copenhagen and Helsinki. Departures for these services can be from UK airports such as Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, Birmingham and Newcastle, as well as London.

Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad fly via their hub airports in Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi respectively from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle, and Edinburgh. You can also fly with Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong from Manchester and London or on Singapore Airlines from the same UK cities. Connecting flights take around 14 hours.

Flights to Tokyo land at either Tokyo Narita International Airport or Tokyo Haneda Airport.

Narita is served by the high-speed Keisei Skyliner train, which will have you in central Tokyo in a little over 40 minutes for around 2,500 yen (£13.50) per person. A few minutes slower but a few pounds cheaper, the Narita Express train is another good option. A taxi fare between the airport and central Tokyo can cost 20,000 yen (a little over £100).

Haneda Airport is much closer to the city than Narita Airport. From Haneda, hop on the Tokyo Monorail or use the Keikyu Line on the underground system and you’ll reach Hamamatsucho Station (monorail) or Keikyu Shinagawa Station (underground) in central Tokyo in just 14 minutes; tickets cost around 500 yen (£2.70). A fixed-rate taxi fare between Haneda and central locations is around 7,000 yen (£38), plus extra for tolls.

Pre-book car hire in Tokyo and collect your vehicle upon arrival at the airport, saving on the cost of transfers. Tokyo is well served by public transport and car parking can be costly. But for travel elsewhere and at your own pace, cheap car hire is a worthwhile investment.
