Flights to Malaysia

Travellers to Malaysia from the UK have a good range of flight options...

The national carrier, Malaysia Airlines, offers the only non-stop flights from the UK leaving London Heathrow several times daily and reaching Kuala Lumpur (KUL) in around 13 hours.

Other carriers offer connecting flights, some of the most popular being Qatar Airways, Etihad and Emirates via their Middle Eastern hubs. All fly from London and Manchester, with Emirates offering additional flights from Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow, and Qatar from Edinburgh.

Alternative regional departures are via Paris and Frankfurt with Air France and Lufthansa.

For other destinations in Malaysia you can either connect in Kuala Lumpur or through other regional hubs such as Bangkok, Hong Kong or Singapore.

It's easy to get around in this generally safe and well developed nation...

You should find few difficulties in getting to your destination from any Malaysian airport. Taxis are in good supply at official airport ranks, or you can often book at booths within the airport. You should either agree a rate or, if you don't, ensure the meter is switched on. Alternatively, you can pay in advance and get a coupon at the official booth. Avoid unofficial taxi touts, who are likely to overcharge tourists.

Public transport in Malaysia is extremely efficient and good value. Use local and long-distance buses or one of the train services that serve Peninsular Malaysia. (There's only one railway line among the forests and hills of Malaysian Borneo.)

Car hire in Malaysia is widely available at the airports. A hangover of British rule, driving in Malaysia is on the left. Note that traffic in the big cities can be overwhelming.

You can check in at budget places with basic facilities almost anywhere, while the cities feature some of the world's finest luxury hotels. Stay by the beach in wonderful rooms with sea views or head up into the hills for a night in a colonial-era tea plantation house. Be at one with nature in East Malaysian rainforest lodges or visit the islands for incredible scuba-diving opportunities.
