Flights to Mexico

Mexico City International is the country’s busiest and largest airport, and the annual volume of passenger traffic has increased significantly over recent years to almost 40 million people. Cancun Airport sees roughly half that number of passengers. For a town that was little more than a humble fishing village 50 years ago, that’s rather impressive.

Be aware: there is often an airport tax payable upon leaving Mexico by air. It’s more of a visa fee than a departure tax, but whatever you call it, avoid problems by having some spare cash handy.

At the time of updating in early 2023, in Cancun this tax fee is roughly USD $48  (£39) per person, while at Mexico City International the price is approximately USD $19 (£16). Many airlines include this tax in the price of the ticket, but always check and be prepared.
