The average non-stop flight to Lanzarote takes between 4 hours 10 minutes and 4 hours 30 minutes. Flights with stops vary from around 7 hours 30 minutes to well over 15 hours. The savings from adding a stop are rarely big enough to justify the inconvenience, but it's worth a look if you're really keen to get the lowest price.

If you're flying to Lanzarote for a classic sun-and-sand holiday, your best bet is one of the three big resorts: Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca.

You could quite easily spend your time shuttling back and forth between pool, beach, bar and bed, though Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca have pleasant old towns to explore too, and the former offers a selection of local cruises, including whale and dolphin-spotting trips. For a dash more culture, base yourself in the capital Arrecife, which has a good contemporary art museum inside an 18^th-century castle. It's also close to the remarkable Cesar Manrique Foundation, based in the Lanzarote-born architect's self-designed home.

To get the very best out of the island, it's worth hiring a car, even just for a few days. It'll help you explore the volcanic landscapes of Timanfaya National Park and the palm-covered northern region of Haria (where committed Manrique fans will find another of his former homes).
