If you’re flying to Murcia from one of the many airports in the UK that offer direct routes, then your journey will take between 2 hours 30 minutes and 3 hours 10 minutes. If you aren’t near one of those airports, then the journey could take a bit longer – you’ll most likely have to connect in London or Dublin, adding several hours to your flight.

You’ll fly into Murcia San Javier Airport. The easiest way to get to Murcia’s town centre from here is to drive or take a taxi. Car hire is available in the airport, offering access to further flung corners of the region. Public transport is available but times are often limited. Buses run from the airport into the nearby town of Santiago de la Ribera. From the transport hub here, you can board buses to Murcia, Madrid, Cartagena and more.

The laid-back town of Murcia promises some of the best food in Spain and dazzling historic sights without the crowds of rival cities. Like the more famous southern Spanish cities in Andalucia, it mixes architectural styles from Europe and Arabia: there is an ornate Baroque cathedral and Moorish city walls, and the dramatic castle of Alhama de Murcia overlooks the city from a rocky hill. In between admiring all that, you can explore several free museums and dine on superb tapas.

If you’ve hired a car, then make sure you visit the coastline at least once during your trip to Murcia. The area around Aguilas is wild and beautiful, with large swathes of shoreline untouched by development. Calblanque Beach, in Cartagena, is closer and equally beautiful.
