The good news about getting to Dalaman is that you can hop on a direct flight from just about every corner of the UK. That means you should only be in the air for around 4 hours before landing in Turkey. If you can’t fly direct, it isn’t too much hassle to connect via Istanbul. Generally, it’s about 3 hours and 40 minutes from London to Istanbul, then 1 hour and 15 minutes from there to Dalaman.

There is only one airport serving the Dalaman region. Havas Land Services operates shuttles that correspond with flights landing in the airport, which head to Marmaris and Fethiye. They will also stop in towns along the way – just ask the driver. Taxis are available but they are expensive while car hire is another option. The times in the table below relate to reaching Dalaman town, which is just north of the airport.

While many visitors will spend most of their time in a single resort, it can be worth hiring a car from Dalaman Airport to explore the region in more depth. Head west from the airport to reach Marmaris, one of the region's most popular resorts. Kids love the range of entertainment options here – water parks and rafting trips will thrill all ages.

The charming, atmospheric Old Town, meanwhile, gives you a glimpse into the region’s history. Drive east and you’ll reach the Fethiye district, where ancient cities lie hidden in the cliffs and paragliders soar over the calm waters of Oludeniz Lagoon. Dalaman town itself is pleasant but sleepy; the nearest place of interest is the laid-back beach town of Sarigerme about 5km (3 miles) away.

British nationals will need a visa to enter Turkey, unless you’re a cruise ship passenger visiting a sea port or nearby city and staying for less than 72 hours.

You can obtain an e-Visa online before you travel through the dedicated Republic of Turkey e-Visa website. The e-Visa costs US$20, and can be applied for up to three months in advance of travelling. Be wary of unauthorised websites issuing fake e-Visas and be sure to get yours from the official channel. You’re advised to carry a hardcopy of your e-Visa with you in case there is a problem with the computer systems at the Turkish port of entry.

As of July 2017, it’s still possible to obtain a multiple entry visitor visa on arrival. These are valid for 90 days and cost £20, which must be paid in cash. However, this scheme is likely to end in the near future, so be prepared and get your e-Visa in advance to avoid any problems once you arrive.
