Airports have grown and increased their services so flights to England have been bringing more visitors each year. Internal flights also make the rest of the United Kingdom and Channel Islands more accessible.

The largest airport is London Heathrow (LHR), which handles the most long-haul flights into the country, closely followed by Gatwick (LGW). These two airports provide connections internally and externally and are ideal for those visiting the south of the country.

However, the airports at Luton (LTN), Stansted (STN), Southend (SEN) and City (LCY) are all within easy reach of the capital and are good alternatives, depending on the origin of your flight.

London is famous for its museums, theatres and art galleries as well as the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace, but there is more to England than its capital city.

England flights to regional airports now make travel further afield a possibility and have opened up the country to new visitors. William Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon, is easily accessible from Birmingham (BHX) and so are the beautiful Cotswolds.

Explore the northern moors and industrial landscape by means of Manchester Airport (MAN), which also provides access to the Peak District and the towns of Bakewell and Buxton.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LP) is the destination for many Beatles fans. You can visit the Cavern Club, where the Fab Four started out, and the Beatles Museum. There's also the famous Mersey Ferry and, further up the coast, the glitzy lights of Blackpool. You can book direct flights to Blackpool, which has its own international airport (BLK).

East Midlands Airport (EMA) is close to Nottingham, the city of Robin Hood and fine Nottingham Lace. Further north, there's Leeds/Bradford Airport (LBA), the gateway to the wild and desolate Yorkshire Moors which were home to the famous Bronte sisters.

In Yorkshire the coastline is as rugged as the moors and Robin Hood Airport (DSA) will take you to the towns of Whitby and Scarborough.

Holy Island, or Lindisfarne as it’s also known, lies off the Northumberland Coast, which is one of the wildest stretches of beach in the country. Nearby is Bamburgh Castle, which stands sentinel over wild windswept dunes. Newcastle Airport (NCL) provides access to this beautiful and natural coast and the countryside leading to the border with Scotland.

If the milder South Coast is more to your liking then Southampton Airport (SOU) is a good starting point. The Isle of Wight ferry leaves from Portsmouth, which is home to HMS Victory and the Historic Dockyard. Bristol Airport (BRS) and Exeter Airport (EXT) cover the western region and Exmoor and Dartmoor. The historic city of Bath, with its famous Roman Baths, is close by.

Newquay Cornwall Airport (NQY) is the gateway to the idyllic beachscapes, rolling surf and cream teas of gorgeous Cornwall, in the south-west.

To the east is Norwich Airport (NWI). The city has a lovely cathedral and is not far from the east coast and classic seaside towns such as Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.
