Instead you should opt for connecting flights via a US gateway as the best option to reach the city. Flying time is upwards of around 11 hours and the fastest connections are with Air Canada via Toronto from Heathrow, Manchester and Glasgow.

Other alternatives are with British Airways and American via New York, United via Chicago or Delta, also via New York. Each of these has departures from London, as well as from Manchester and Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Flights to the city arrive at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Travel from the airport couldn't be easier with the new direct West Busway, which connects the airport with a variety of destinations downtown. It costs $3.75 (less than £2.50) per person to use this bus service, which departs every 30 minutes from outside door 6 of the baggage claim area.

You could also choose a cab or a car service to get you to your hotel. The airport is a 40-minute drive from downtown Pittsburgh and a fare should set you back around $40 (roughly £23). Shuttle services are also available and are likely to cost less per person than a shared taxi.

You can also hire a car that can easily be organised at the airport or be booked in advance along with your Pittsburgh flights. There’s plenty to see near Pittsburgh and having your own wheels offers the freedom of the open road.
