Disconnect and untangle yourself from the everyday with a cottage holiday in Suffolk. Escape to the coast and enjoy a proper East Anglian beach break, head inland and discover nature reserves and lush gardens, or let your stomach take the lead and enjoy all that the “foodie county” has to offer.
As with its northern neighbour Norfolk, Suffolk is very much shaped by its natural assets. Fringed by a spectacular 50-mile-long stretch of coastline and home to equally impressive countryside - as epitomised by the beautiful Constable Country - this county is ideal for a cottage break heavy on the great outdoors.
Whether you fancy a seaside escape or a more rural alternative, Suffolk offers both in close proximity. It’s relatively compact and easy to explore – especially if you have a hire car.
If it’s Suffolk’s coast you’re after, you can't really go wrong with Lowestoft and its broad, sandy Blue Flag beach. Other top coastal options include Dunwich – dubbed the ‘Lost City of England’ – Benjamin Britten’s Aldeburgh, the comparatively small Orford – which foodies will love – and the classic seaside town Felixstowe.
For those looking for a greener, grassier and more countrified experience – think homely rustic cottage with a toasty log fire – book yourself a holiday cottage either in and around the very heart of Suffolk, or towards the south or west of the county.
Your options include market towns like Stowmarket, where you can enjoy Helmingham Hall Gardens and the Museum of East Anglian Life; Eye, whose notable attractions include its namesake castle; Bury St Edmunds, which offers a treasure trove of historic delights (it’s also described as ‘the jewel in the crown of Suffolk’); and Sudbury, birthplace of artist Thomas Gainsborough (check out Gainsborough's House).
Cottages in and around villages and hamlets like Lavenham, which has a rich wool heritage, Flatford, immortalised by the artist John Constable – and not far off Dedham Vale AONB – and Elveden, great for outdoor activities, are perfect if you’re looking for a deeper sense of escape – just be sure to pick a place that’s within walking distance of a good pub!
Finally, there is always, Ipswich, Suffolk’s largest and best-known town. Head here for more of an activity-packed cottage break. Highlights include its bustling waterfront area, Christchurch Park and cultural attractions like Ipswich Museum and the New Wolsey Theatre. Time your staycation right and you’ll get to experience Ipswich’s electrifying biennial Maritime Festival too.
