If your main aim is relaxation, Toronto can offer it by the bucketful.

There are plenty of parks dotted around the urban sprawl, and if you head out to the Toronto Islands, you can enjoy a car-free atmosphere and wonderful views back to the city. The boardwalk overlooking Lake Ontario in the laidback Beaches neighbourhood is a great place to potter for a few hours.

If you need to put even more distance between you and the metropolitan din, drive an hour or two north to Lake Simcoe or Georgian Bay, or east to Prince Edward County, where spa-equipped lakeside lodges offer all-inclusive package holidays close to Toronto’s buzz.

When looking at holidays to Toronto, keep in mind that although springtime in the city is pretty, it can also be rainy. Summertime, on the other hand, is very hot, but has a calendar filled with some of the city’s best events.

Before the headiness of the holiday season, the Santa Claus Parade is a fun event for the whole family. Held annually in November, it includes a parade of floats, marching bands and, of course, Santa Claus himself.
