But the weather is not the only consideration when thinking about when to take your trip to Cannes. The annual film festival (see below) will see hotel prices skyrocket. The increased security presence and throngs of photographers might also put you off a visit at this busy time. If you do want to go, book your holiday well in advance.

Summer is also high season in Cannes, meaning more throngs (and a few thongs) on the beach. If you can travel outside of July and August, you might save money on the cost of your holiday package. Winter is the cheapest time to travel to Cannes, and while the sea will probably be too chilly for a leisurely dip, you can at least relax in the knowledge that there will be no thongs in sight!

Cannes Film Festival (Festival de Cannes); May: Perhaps the most famous film festival on the planet, this frenzy of flashbulbs, Hollywood smiles, bow ties and sequins is a huge celebration of moviemaking. See it or sidestep it, it’s your choice.

Fireworks Festival (Festival d'art Pyrotechnique) July-August: Find a spot along the Promenade de la Croisette or book a place on a boat in the bay as the night sky above Cannes becomes a competition canvas for the world’s best fireworks’ artists.

Romance: Take a hand-in-hand stroll and get tiny glimpses of the Cannes that once was on Le Suquet – a steep patchwork of streets, bars, restaurants and shops where the lives of the local fishermen and their families were once played out. 

Relaxing: Sail from the thrills of city life and get a lungful of nature on a day trip to Ile Sainte-Marguerite, one of the nearby Lerins Islands. It’s wooded walking trails and secluded coves are the perfect place to unwind.

Free and cheap: You don’t have to take out a new mortgage to visit Cannes. Meandering among the entertainers, rollerbladers and eccentric locals (maybe even a celeb or two) on La Croisette is a simple pleasure that costs not a cent.

Shopping: YSL, Dior, Cartier… all the big designer names are emblazoned above windows on La Croisette. Holiday keepsakes, local produce and affordable fashion stores are easier to find on Rue Meynadier.

Nightlife: For a glimpse of the high-stakes crowd, just follow the heady scent of aftershave and perfume to the tables and slot machines of the casinos in Cannes. Elsewhere, bars range from comfy and charming to chic and costly. Research before you go (so you don’t get a shock when the bill arrives!).
