Relaxation is a way of life in this quiet part of Portugal. With a vast beach sporting plenty of sunbeds and a couple of laidback restaurants just a short stroll from the village, it's easy to see why.

There are several other beaches nearby that are also well worth a visit by shuttle bus, taxi or hire car. Praia Dos Três Irmãos, for example, is a dramatic sight with imposing rock formations (the “Three Brothers”) overlooking the golden sand.

Carnival; February/March: Carnival time is perfect for family holidays in Alvor. The streets are taken over by parades and parties, with much of the fun and games designed for children.

Liberation Day; April 25: Alvor makes a colourful contribution to this national celebration. Homes, restaurants and bars all roll out the bunting and the flags to create a vibrant party atmosphere.
