Fuengirola holidays

If that’s a little too high-octane for you and you’ve already had your fill of sunshine, seek out the peaceful side of Fuengirola. Browse gifts and fashion at the Miramar Shopping Centre, explore the town’s top tapas spots or just wander around the shop-lined streets. For a history hit by day, visit Sohail Castle, and then return at night to enjoy live music – this historic attraction doubles as an outdoor venue.

Sounds like your cup of tea? Fuengirola’s excellent nightlife options will keep the party going. The town centre is crammed with great places to eat and drink, whether you’re looking for a big night out filled with dancefloor classics or relaxed bottle of wine with your tapas.

Looking for a cheap holiday to Fuengirola? No problem. Travel in April and early May, as well as late September and early October, and you’re likely to bag a good deal. You’ll still have plenty of warm sunshine (with temperatures peaking at the mid-20s), but will be able to enjoy the place without the summer crowds.

Fuengirola’s five or so mile stretch of pretty coastline, dubbed ‘The King of Spain’s Promenade’ (El Paseo Maritimo Rey de España), certainly earns its nickname.

Of the bunch, Playa del Castillo is one of the best. You’ll find, of course, sun loungers and parasols, as well as designated areas for BBQs – so bring your own supplies and make a day of it with an alfresco late lunch.

Feeling energetic? There are ample watersports to get you moving, including banana boats and jet skis.

Sohail Castle

Soak up some of the region’s history at the 10th-century Sohail Castle. An impressively well-preserved fortress, today the castle is a monument, museum and venue space rolled into one.

Head over in the daytime to see some of the excavated ancient stone ruins, which predate the medieval building and check out its calendar quirky evening entertainment, too. Everything from live concerts – musicians like Bob Dylan have graced its stage – to beer festivals are held here.

Amusement parks

Thrill-seekers and families will love the theme parks and waterparks on Fuengirola’s doorstep. Close to the town centre – it’s about a 20-minute walk from the marina if you’re so inclined – is Aquamijas, a popular waterpark filled with slides, wave pools and areas specifically designed for toddlers and teens.

A little further out (about a 20-minute drive from town),Tivoli World is home to Ferris wheels, carousels and white-knuckle rollercoasters, while right on the water is Costa Water Park, a huge inflatable structure of climbing frames and slides that floats on the sea.

Bioparc Fuengirola

For an easy family day out, make a beeline for Bioparc Fuengirola. A self-titled ‘immersion zoo’, the park prides itself on making visitors feel like they’ve stepped into the animal world, rather than an enclosure (of course, the same goes for the animals).

Here, you’ll find all creatures big and small, including gorillas, rhinos and tigers, as well as crocodiles, geckos and tortoises. And if you’re in Fuengirola during July and August, you’ll have the chance to see some of the animals after dark – the zoo stays open until 11pm.

Nightlife

Whether you’re looking to disco dance until dawn or kick back with a chilled beer and watch the sunset, a Fuengirola holiday has a night out to suit you. The town centre is lined with excellent bars, from cool cocktail dens to brightly lit clubs spinning 90s dance hits. Beyond, at Sohail Castle, you’ll find an impressive line-up of festivals and concerts during the summer.

There are plenty of English-speaking restaurants to choose from too, serving everything from British classics to traditional Spanish dishes.
