The south coast is the island’s most developed stretch, with a string of Barbados hotels and apartments across all budgets, and featuring the legendary nightlife mile, St. Lawrence Gap. The Gap, as it is known locally, is generously lined with restaurants, bars, clubs and shops. There are plenty of quieter options near here, such as Dover Beach and it is certainly possible to kick back in tranquility during the day then head off to the Gap come nightfall for some beers and booty-shaking. If crowds aren’t your bag, go eastwards where crashing Atlantic waves and strong winds have created an altogether more rugged, unspoilt coastline. Pigalle, the Parisian red light district, has always been considered a tad sketchy, but these days boutique Paris hotels are steadily popping up and transforming the vibe of the area. If you don’t want to feel too out of the loop, Crane Beach and its surroundings on the southeast coast is a good compromise. It’s one of the island’s most striking beaches, flanked by cliffs, sand dunes and soft sand, where the Caribbean water meets the Atlantic.

You’ll relish some truly excellent Barbados hotels here, including The Crane, the oldest resort on the island. To really get away from it all, venture further up the east coast to the resorts and beaches around Bathsheba in the parish of St. Joseph.
