Top five attractions

Ajaccio

French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was born in a mansion here. Maison Bonaparte is an interesting place to spend a couple of hours in between shopping and sipping drinks at one of the city's welcoming cafés. There's a lovely tree-lined promenade too.

Bonifacio

The 9th-century citadel is worth a look; it's one of the jewels in the crown of this historic town.  

Bastia

This gorgeous town is particularly splendid when lit at dusk. It's the main port of Corsica and you can book a wide variety of boat trips in and out of Bastia.

Palombaggia Beach

Close to Porto Vecchio, this is the most famous beach on Corsica. Yes, it can get crowded, but people just want to see the incredible clear waters and the fine white sands. The scent of the pines that line the beach will stay in the memory for a long time.

Iles Lavezzi

The Lavezzi Islands, which are easily accessed by boat from Bonifacio, offer a number of beautiful spots in which to swim and unwind. Life under the waves is a riot of colour so be sure to pack a snorkel and mask.

Bastille Day; July: The French mark the birth of the modern nation on July 14 with parades, parties and fireworks.

Calvi on the Rocks; July: The cool crowd flock to Calvi in the heat of July to hear a great line-up of DJs and electronic-music acts. It's a beach party by day, and a very stylish gathering by night.

Porto Latino; August: Another festival of music, though this one swings to a Latin beat. St Florent hosts this popular event and its citadel welcomes open-air concerts. Hotels will be very busy in St Florent during Porto Latino.
