West of town, a growing number of hotels in Sorrento are opening in the Via Capo cliffs area, which is easily reachable by bus (though it’s also doable as a short walk) and looks back over Marina Grande and the coast towards Vesuvius.

While cost-effective options abound, the hippest member of Sorrento’s luxury scene is also found here. La Minervetta’s dozen light-drenched rooms, art-studio vibe, solarium and outdoor Jacuzzi make it ultra-desirable and the coolest place for miles.

Just a 15-minute journey northeast along the coast from Sorrento is Sant’Agnello, a village with its own train station. Staying here is a tad cheaper on average, while upmarket places can offer larger spaces to guests – a great alternative for Sorrento luxury-seekers preferring a retreat-style residence.

The opulent addresses include the apricot-coloured Grand Hotel Parco del Sole and the antique Relais Villa Savarese, with its palm-sprinkled parkland.

Sorrento’s five-star hotels have a rival in Sant’Agnello, too. The Parco dei Principi has a spa, salt-water pool and seafood waterfront restaurant, while its cool tile floors and lush garden are an exercise in Mediterranean dreaminess.

Deals are common, even at Sorrento’s best hotels. In particular, check TravelSupermarket from mid-July onwards, when late offers for August and beyond can suddenly become available.

Note, however, that Sorrento now imposes an occupancy tax for stays between April and October inclusively. It depends on size and category, but will be either €1 or €2 per person per night for stays of seven nights or less. Children under 18 years old are exempt from the charge, which may or may not be included in your package.
