The Old Casbah

This hilltop fortress stands high above the newer Agadir. Take a steady walk up the hill or get a taxi for terrific views of the city and a little glimpse into the past. There isn’t much to see, but it’s worth the trip.

Souk el Had

A new handbag, a bottle of Argan oil, a traditional Moroccan lamp – whatever you think you’re coming to buy, be prepared to leave with more as this bustling market tempts even the sternest of spenders. Enter at gates 5-10 to head straight for the tourist goods.

La Medina d’Agadir

A modern, purpose-built arts and cultural centre, this medina nevertheless retains the charm of a traditional village. Watch craftspeople at work and buy their wares as a souvenir. 

Souss-Massa National Park

This park will delight bird-watchers, who can expect to see bald ibis, spoonbills and warblers, plus many other winged creatures. Four-legged animals, such as gazelle, are protected in captive breeding programmes too.

Taroudant

Drive east for an hour from Agadir and you will see the colossal terracotta defensive walls of the city of Taroudant. Markets make this unique site feel like a mini Marrakech.

Honey Festival; May: Nearby Argana hosts this popular celebration of the humble honeybee and its produce. If you have a sweet tooth, this is the event for you.

Sahraoui Festival; June: Camel races, and traditional dancing and singing form the backbone of this summer event in Agadir.

Moussem of Tan Tan in Goulimine; July: This is a full-on day trip from Agadir (or stopover close to Goulimine), but the experience is unforgettable. Tuareg Nomads come from the Sahara to trade goods, buy (and race) camels and horses, and keep traditional elements of their culture alive.
