The port city, which straddles islands as well as the mainland, features a number of upmarket suburbs in which you'll find luxury hotels. Book four- and five-star hotels to stay in havens of excellent service and supreme comfort, which make you feel like you're a world away from the hectic pace of Lagos, where the streets swarm with heat and commotion.

While some of the city's attractions are located on the mainland, many visitors choose to stay on the islands of Lagos. Lagos Island is a busy destination and home to the Central Business District. Attractions and restaurants are on your doorstep if you book business-style hotels in this area, which is also home to a number of opulent top-class hotels and smaller boutique-style pads.

Just to the east of Lagos Island is popular Ikoyi, which is an upmarket area featuring hotels and leisure options.

Hop across Five Cowrie Creek via the bridge and discover the pleasures of nightlife central, Victoria Island. Shopping and beach-front pursuits also draw holidaymakers to this part of Lagos, which is home to an excellent range of places to stay. The same can be said of the Lekki Peninsula, a little further east from Victoria Island. It's in these areas that you'll find two of the most popular beaches in Lagos, Bar Beach and Lekki Beach.

Ikeja, an area to the north of the central part of mainland Lagos, has many hotels worth considering as it is highly convenient for the airport.

Several hotel chains have properties in the city – look out for hotels from Southern Sun, Four Points by Sheraton, Ibis, Protea, Radisson Blu, Crowne Plaza and Best Western.

Lagos is hot and sticky year round, so be sure to look hotels with air conditioning. Rain falls mostly between early spring and late summer, so you might find cheaper hotel rooms during this humid and very wet period.
