The most upscale hotels in Faro tend to be close to the marina, offering enviable views and rooftop pools and bars from which to enjoy them.

In the evening, you can wander down to the nearby Jardim Manuel Bívar park for a stroll and perhaps a glass of sweet wine, or wander along Faro’s waterfront and take in the cool calm of the marina, where fishing boats bob calmly on the water, nets and lines stowed after a hot, hectic day. The old town is just a five-minute walk away – just close enough for an evening amble through its cobbled lanes and a beer in one of the lively little cafés.

If a bells-and-whistles stay with everything under one roof and concierge service appeals, you’ll find a good selection of luxurious resorts with their own swimming pools, spas, bars, beaches and restaurants spread out to the west of Faro towards the golfing hotspot of Portimão.

Staying here means being near the 40-odd nine and 18-hole courses that draw professionals to their manicured fairways throughout the year. Most hotels can book you a game at a local championship course and many have their own greens to practise on before you tee off in front of other serious golfers.

Choose a beachfront resort and you’ll also be able to dip into the warm turquoise waters at your leisure, or in some cases charter a yacht or sailing boat and explore the treasures of the Algarve, including spectacular white cliffs, tiny islands, hidden caves and secluded beaches.
