La Rioja, whose vineyards carpet the ochre-soil lands around the Ebro River, promises rich and fruit-laden Tempranillo-based reds as well as elegant hotels set in centuries-old buildings.

Rivalling Rioja for the attention of visiting oenophiles is Ribera del Duero, north of Madrid, where you’ll find a flurry of small-scale producers.
