Crowds flock to Fuengirola between spring and autumn, with the summer months of July and August attracting huge numbers. If you plan to visit Fuengirola, hotels should be booked as early as possible to secure a spot at a hotel that suits you. There's plenty to choose from. Four-star hotels with excellent facilities dot the seafront and feature swimming pools, bars, restaurants and often offer nightly entertainment and day-time activity clubs for children. A large number of mid-range hotels attract holidaymakers on full-board or all-inclusive bargain breaks; standards are generally reasonable and the food is decent. It's always worth exploring the eateries of Fuengirola though, to find a zestier taste of Spanish cuisine. Tour the back streets and the public squares and eat where the locals eat for authentic Spain on a plate. 

Budget hotels generally take the form of independent Spanish guesthouses and while they usually don't feature facilities such as swimming pools, you will find a clean room and a friendly welcome. 

Self-catering options are also popular with visiting families; book apartments in the centre or villas on the outskirts of the resort.

Sohail Castle

This striking castle demonstrates how in-demand this stretch of coastline has always been. Built to protect Fuengirola from marauders, the castle is an unmistakable piece of the resort's skyline and it's a pleasant place to spend a couple of hours.

Blue flags are in abundance on the eight beaches of Fuengirola. There are water sports available along this massive expanse of sand and plenty of space to simply unwind.

Bioparc Fuengirola

See all sorts of birds, reptiles and mammals at this friendly zoo, which is located just minutes from the beach a little way south of the town centre. 

Plaza de la Constitucion

The heart and soul of Fuengirola, this public square in the centre is framed by churches, cafés and historic buildings and dotted with sculptures and fountains.

Tivoli World

One of the most popular theme parks on the Costa del Sol, Tivoli World offers rides and shows and is just a 20-minute drive away in Benalmadena.

International Fair of Nations; April/May: Fuengirola shows its cosmopolitan and welcoming attitude with this show of international tastes, crafts and sights at the fairground. Dozens of stalls are manned by a team from different countries - take a tour of the world when you visit in late spring.

St John's Day; June: Also known as the La Fiesta de San Juan, the locals mark Midsummer with bonfires and late-night dips in the sea, supposedly to send any evil spirits scurrying away. A terrific party atmosphere keeps the beaches lively all evening.

Fuengirola Fair; October: Traditional dress, horse shows, bars, tasty food... you can find them all at this annual event, which features a huge fairground.
