Nottingham Castle

Take a stroll up to Castle Rock to see this mighty building, which houses an art gallery and a museum.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem

Tales of the past and quirky legends abound in this ancient pub (ask about the pregnancy chair), which many claim is the oldest drinking establishment in England. Sup a drink in one of the pub's caves. 

National Ice Centre 

Ice skating, whatever the weather, is on offer at the nation's first Olympic-sized rink. Plenty of family activities are available, while the venue is also home to concerts as one of the rinks can convert to an arena. 

Galleries of Justice Museum

Housed in the famous Lace Market, this excellent museum takes visitors on a journey through the city's history of justice, crime and punishment. Once the office of the Sherriff of Nottingham, you'll hear plenty about Robin Hood, too.

Trent Bridge Cricket Ground

Just south of the river is this important cricket ground, said to be the third-oldest in the world. Time your trip just right to see a test match or county game involving home side Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.

Robin Hood Festival; August: You'll have to travel an hour north to Sherwood Forest for this annual event, but fans of the fabled outlaw won't mind. From woodland magic and music workshops, to evening merriment and jousting, this is one fun event. 

Nottingham Caribbean Carnival; August: The city's large Caribbean population turns out in force to set the stage for one of the best events of the year. A riot of colourful costumes and beguiling dances entrance visitors. 

Nottingham Goose Fair; October: A huge travelling funfair arrives at the city's Forest Recreation Ground and for a few days in autumn the excitement never stops.
