Stratford-upon-Avon

Without a doubt, the jewel in Warwickshire’s crown is William Shakespeare’s home town of Stratford-upon-Avon. As well as the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the various Shakespeare houses, you’ll find a charming and picturesque town centre full of great restaurants, cafes, shops and wide open spaces.

Castles

Warwickshire is home to a number of castles, with those at Warwick and Kenilworth attracting big crowds. Warwick Castle is an all-singing, all-dancing tourist attraction with shows, displays and battle re-enactments throughout the day. Kenilworth Castle is quieter, but not short of historical importance as it often hosted Queen Elizabeth I.

Shopping

The streets of pretty Georgian town Royal Leamington Spa are lined with handsome, independent boutiques as well as well-known high street stores.

Art

Warwickshire has several art galleries, but for a whole day out, take a look at Compton Verney in the south of the county. This grand stately home has been transformed into a stylish art space.

Atherstone Ball Game; February: The streets of this seemingly unassuming North Warwickshire town witness sporting carnage as people battle it out for two hours to get hold of a ball. The winner of this ancient game is the one clutching the ball at close of play.

Global Gathering; July: Long Marston Airfield hosts this weekend-long dance festival each summer.

Mop Fair; October: Each year the town of Stratford-upon-Avon is transformed into a huge fairground with Ferris wheels and rides dotting the streets. It’s a lovely time to see this pleasant destination.
