Less than an hour’s drive away from Glasgow lies Loch Lomond, one of Scotland’s most famous tourist attractions. The largest freshwater lake in Great Britain, Loch Lomond spans Scotland’s Highlands and Lowlands, sparkling at the foot of the forested hillsides of the Trossachs. Its beauty attracts holidaymakers, keen anglers, water sports junkies and hikers who are lured to the rugged landscape surrounding the loch.
Luxury waterfront hotels with fantastic loch views usually cost well above £100 a night, but the prices get cheaper as you move further away from the lake. Hotels along the main arterial route A82 between Bellsmyre and Milton are particularly good value – you can get a comfortable room for half of what you’d pay on the lakefront. Use the hotel price comparison tool on TravelSupermarket to secure a cheap hotel deal prior to your trip.
For fresh air and fabulous photo opportunities, sail off on a cruise from Balloch on the south side of the lake to Inchmurrin Island, where the ruins of Lennox Castle stand. There are five self-catering cottages and apartments on the island if you choose to stay away from the crowds. Alternatively, you can cruise further to the ancient village of Luss, where small lanes fragranced with sweet herbs and wildflowers make for a lovely place to walk and have a cup of tea. Sweeney Cruise offers a fine selection of cruises from Balloch should lakeside life appeal to you.
If merely gazing at the waters of Loch Lomond on a relaxing cruise doesn’t quite do it for you, there are thrilling jetboat tours for those who enjoy high-energy distractions. There’s also an option to take a dip in the lake’s clear water during one of many organised summer swimming events or to go kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding or canoeing. For hikers, the sprawling glens are yours to explore. You can walk or cycle along designated waterfront paths, hike up forest trails into the hills or scale nearby peaks to be rewarded with magnificent views over the loch and the forests beyond.
