Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed with cancer or are recovering, it can be trickier to find travel insurance. We explain how to find the right policy for you.

When you have cancer, or any pre-existing medical condition, insurers will see you as a higher risk as you are more likely to make a claim. This can mean that finding travel insurance with cancer is harder work and, generally, more expensive than before your diagnosis.

But don’t let this put you off travelling or be tempted to travel without insurance, as there are specialist policies available. Travel insurance is an essential part of any holiday as it can protect you financially should you have to claim for cancellation, lost or stolen baggage or possessions, legal costs, or many other issues. And travel insurance can be even more important if you have cancer, as you may need to unexpectedly cancel a trip due to your illness or claim for medical costs while you’re away.

Some mainstream insurers may agree to insure you but will not pay out for any claims that relate to your cancer – you’ll have to pay these costs yourself. But there are also specialist companies who offer more comprehensive travel insurance for cancer patients as well as travellers with other pre-existing conditions. So compare your options.

Be prepared to have to answer a lot of questions about your cancer – for example, the stage you’re at, your treatment and the prognosis – to get an accurate travel insurance quote. While these can be difficult to answer, make sure you are honest or you risk your cancer travel insurance being invalid. It may be wise to talk to your consultant about any questions you’re unsure of before you take the policy out.

Make sure you compare a number of policies to get the financial protection to suit your needs at the most competitive price.
